CASSIDY ALEXA: What are your top principles for health?

DAYNE BARKLEY: My top principles for health include:

  1. Getting adequate sun exposure on the skin and in the naked eyes especially in the AM and around midday (solar noon).
  2. Prioritizing water quality; both drinking and bathing in, proper filtration, and re-mineralization, or harvesting local spring water.
  3. Blocking ALAN (Artificial Light At Night) with consistent use of blue light blocking glasses.
  4. Finally, connecting to the earth everyday with your bare feet (grounding/earthing) to collect those free electons.

CA: What is your morning routine?

DB: My morning routine consists of the above morning sun exposure practice, as well as analysing my sleep data from the previous night with my OURA Ring, taking my morning HRV (Heart Rate Variability) reading, 10 minutes of meditation, 8 min. of bodyweight movements, reading 2-3 articles on my Pocket App and then 30 minutes of reading from my book collection consisting of all areas of Body, Mind, Spirit.

CA: In acknowledging that every body is unique and has differing requirements, what approximate macros do you recommend?

DB: From my experience and understandings, most humans in the western world will benefit from a lower carbohydrate diet. That being said I truly believe QUALITY is the most important factor when it comes to food and nutrition. A grass-fed and grass finished piece of red meat is not the same as a grain fed, hormone pumped factory cow. As we are so different individually, experimenting with different percentages of macros and tracking it for a short period is by far the most effective solution.

CA: How does exercise play into your day?

DB: On a typical day I’m constantly moving, I have a standing desk which I am shifting my positions frequently and take bodyweight movement micro breaks. I also rebound for at least 15 minutes every day outside for lymph flow and mitochondrial health.

CA: What does a typical dinner look like for you?

DB: I like to keep my dinners early as to prevent any disturbances to my sleep quality. It varies per season; during the summer months more lighter salads and vegetables with extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil, closer to a mediterranean diet. At the moment wild caught fish and pastured eggs are my preferred protein choices.
